Woman_ambassadorsThe Speaker of the House of Commons, the Honourable Geoff Regan, hosted a diplomatic group meeting on 6 March with the Women Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Ottawa, chaired by H.E. Ala Beleavschi, the Ambassador of Moldova to Canada. Entitled Women in Society, this important encounter marked the International Women's Day as well as the 10th anniversary of the Women Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Ottawa.

It was an opportunity for Women Heads of Mission and the Honourable Geoff Regan to highlight women's social, cultural, economic and political achievements and contributions to society. It also offered an occasion to reflect and exchange views on the ongoing efforts to close gender gaps in leadership and entrepreneurship roles in different parts of the world, and on challenges women are still facing today in everyday life.

"Women’s representation in politics is essential. Women’s perspectives, opinions and experience contribute to the development of effective and inclusive public policy and legislation," said the Honourable Geoff Regan.

"Since its creation a decade ago, the Women Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Ottawa has become an important voice for the advancement of women's rights and empowerment in the National Capital Region," said Ambassador Beleavschi. "We are particularly pleased with the importance the Honourable Geoff Regan attaches to the role of women in society and the opportunity given to us, Women Heads of Mission in Ottawa, for a constructive and inspiring dialogue with the Speaker of the House of Commons."

Women Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Ottawa regroups women Heads of Mission in Ottawa, currently consisting of 20 women Ambassadors and High Commissioners. The Group was founded in 2007.
